Often when I tell people I am safety consultant and trainer they would have a dismissive reaction.
“All that is just common sense.”
At first this bothered and confused me, why wouldn’t you want someone looking out for the safety of yourself and others? When I got better at asking questions of these people, (when I stopped believing that the value of what I did should be self evident) their reactions came down to “I will act in my informed self interest.”
Informed self interest assumes a lot.
To be informed you need knowledge, it is impossible to have perfect knowledge in any situation. Think about where you are right now, your home or place of work. If you are inside when was it built? What was the building code then? Was there a building code then? Was the building code followed?
You know very little about the situation you are in and assume a lot.
